Love Sock Company's organic cotton is grown using organic means without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides, therefore helping to improve the quality of the land, prevent water contamination, and conserve biodiversity.
We feel the harmful effects of non-organic cottons and fabrics in our daily lives, irritated skin, rashes and even headaches and dizziness can be caused by the chemical residue trapped in the threads.
People with allergies and chemical sensitivity especially benefit from organic cotton clothing, as conventional cotton may retain harmful toxic residues. Even if you don't have sensitive skin, organic cotton will just feel better against your skin and smell better.
Our organic socks are sweatshop-free designed in USA and made in Europe.
Why organic cotton is a better sock
Conventional cotton growers harvest by machine, which mixes the seeds and seed oil into the cotton. Harsh chemical cleansers are then used to strip the oil and seeds back out, and some conventional dyes contain heavy metals. Our growers hand pick the cotton, so it arrives cleaner. It is washed in hot water with vegetable-based soaps, which cleans and disinfects the raw material without chemicals. The fiber that comes out the other end is stronger, because nothing has weakened it.
Some numbers worth knowing about conventional cotton:
- Conventional cotton is responsible for about 25% of the insecticides used worldwide.
- Some of the most toxic pesticides in use are sprayed on cotton, and they enter the food chain through cottonseed oil.
- Roughly a third of a pound of pesticides and other chemicals goes into making a single t-shirt.
What makes our socks feel different
Organic cotton is the starting point, not the whole story. Every pair is knit with a seamless toe, so there is no thick, blister-causing ridge across the toes, and on a 200 needle machine, which means a finer, denser knit: softer and more breathable, and stronger because of the density of the stitching. The cuff is non-binding and designed to stay up without leaving a ring on your leg.
Every pair is designed in the USA and made with OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified materials, which means the materials are tested for harmful substances.
Where we stand on GOTS certification
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading organic textile processing standard. It covers the whole chain, from ginning through manufacturing to the label on the final product, and it requires that dyes and inks meet strict biodegradability and toxicity limits, that factories treat their waste water, that products carry no allergenic, carcinogenic or toxic chemical residues, and that core International Labour Organisation conventions are met.
Where we stand: every pair we make is organic cotton. Our busier, multi-color patterned styles use a bit more synthetic yarn to render the design cleanly, which is why not every style carries official GOTS certification yet. We are working through GOTS labeling design by design.
